Marble Bed Wet Scrubber

Mobile-Bed Contactor for FGD + Simultaneous Particulate
Marble Bed Scrubbers — mobile-bed FGD with simultaneous particulate capture.
A marble bed wet scrubber is a mobile-bed contactor in which polluted gas rises through a packed bed of lightweight glass spheres irrigated with alkaline (lime or limestone) scrubbing liquid. The upward gas velocity forces the marbles into a constant tumbling motion, creating a highly turbulent mixing zone that prevents particles from settling, flushes captured contaminants, and provides excellent mass transfer for SO₂ absorption — all while operating at L/G ratios of roughly 6–15 L/m³. It is ideal for simultaneous removal of particulate and gaseous pollutants from a dirty gas stream.
How It Works
Marble Bed Wet Scrubber — operating principle.
Polluted gas enters below the support grid and is forced upward through a shallow bed of lightweight glass spheres. As the gas velocity exceeds the marbles' fluidization point, the spheres tumble continuously — preventing particulate from settling on or scaling the bed.
The constant motion (a) flushes captured solids downward into the recycle sump, (b) renews the gas-liquid interface for strong SO₂ and acid gas mass transfer, and (c) keeps the bed self-cleaning without operator intervention. SO₂ absorbs into the alkaline slurry; particulate is swept out with the blowdown. Compatible with lime, limestone slurry, and caustic reagents.
Key Features
Engineering details that matter.
Mobile (Fluidized) Bed
Lightweight glass spheres in constant gas-driven agitation — self-cleaning by design.
Simultaneous FGD + PM
Strong mass transfer for SO₂ and other acid gases along with particulate capture in one vessel.
No Settling or Scaling
Constant tumbling prevents bed plugging, even on high-solids slurry reagents.
Compact Bed vs. Fixed Packing
High mass-transfer efficiency at shallower bed depth than equivalent fixed packed towers.
Typical Applications

Utility & Industrial FGD
Legacy boiler retrofit and new FGD installations — combined SO₂ + fly ash control.
Smelting & Roasting
Smelter and roaster off-gas desulfurization on metals streams.
Acid Gas Service
Where fixed packed beds would plug or scale on dirty or high-solids streams.
Combined Duty
Any application requiring simultaneous acid gas removal and particulate capture.
